Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (that is her real name) won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role. In her acceptance speech she thanked her mother, Kate Hathaway, whom she saw performing the role when she was eight years old, for helping her to connect to the character "on a deeper level".

Kate Hathaway played Fantine in the first US touring production of Les Misérables.
